Fred Schodt

Frederik L. Schodt is a writer, translator, and conference interpreter. He began reading manga in 1970, translating them in 1977, and writing and speaking about them around 1980. Some of the translations he has worked on (either alone or with others) include Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix and Astro Boy, Riyoko Ikeda’s Rose of Versailles, Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell, and Naoki Urasawa/Osamu Tezuka’s Pluto, to name a few. His best known books about manga and anime include, Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics (1983); Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga (1996); and The Astro Boy Essays: Osamu Tezuka, Mighty Atom, and the Manga/Anime Revolution (2007). In 2000, Fred was awarded the Special Category of the Asahi Shimbun's Osamu Tezuka Culture Award. In the same year, his translation of Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama's 1931 pioneering graphic novel, The Four Immigrants Manga, was selected as a finalist for the Pen West USA translation award. In 2009, Fred was awarded the special category of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ International Manga Award. Also, in 2009, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. In November, Fred’s new book, titled Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe, will be published by Stone Bridge Press.
